In many plant species, the endogenous content of ACC, the endogenous activity of ACC synthase, and the rate of ethylene production change almost in parallel to each other indicating that ACC can be measured instead of ethylene more precisely by mass spectrometry. The labelled isotopes are needed for such an analysis.
